Finally, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has visited New Islamabad International Airport today. The one big news that came out is the direction of Prime Minister to the CAA to complete this project by 31st March 2015.
PM Nawaz Sharif visited the location at about 4:00 PM on thursday, 20th of march 2014. He was accompanied by Defence Minister, Khwaja Asif, Information Minister, Parvez Rasheed, Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal and his special adviser on aviation Mr. Shujaat Azeem. The PM was shown different parts of the airport including runways and international/domestic arrivals and departures, customs etc.
Nawaz Sharif showed his annoyance at the delay and additional expenses on the project. He inquired about the reasons for delay in the construction of Airport and also directed FIA to investigate into the matter.
The PM was informed that the civil and fuel work was 98% complete and the ATC tower was 55% complete. The passenger terminal is now 70% complete. The airport will cater to 15 million passengers and 400,000 MT of cargo annually.
Nawaz Sharif directed punjab government to construct small dams to provide water facility to the new Islamabad Airport. He also directed the authorities to make this airport state-of-the-art in terms of construction and services so as to come at par with the ones in Dubai, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Prime Minister directed that a dedicated power plant be installed for the airport and it should have all modern facilities and world class customer handling systems.
The airport will have 2 runways at this phase, while a third runway will be constructed in the second phase. The land is being purchased for the third runway.
Nawaz Sharif has directed the authorities to fast track the construction and complete this project before 31st march 2015.
