Rawalpindi Ring Road Construction Starts Formally, Commissioner Breaks Ground

One of the most important yet controversial projects of Rawalpindi formally started, Rawalpindi Ring Road construction has officially started after the groundbreaking by Commissioner Rawalpindi. Finally, the project has been initiated as it has been for quite a few times in the past. It is yet to be seen, whether the Rawalpindi Ring Road Construction will move on or it gets suspended once again.

The official groundbreaking ceremony was held on 22 September 2023, when Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Liaqat Ali Chatta visited different points of the site and reviewed the work plan and development strategy. He also advised the developers to carry out development steadily and finish the project within the proposed timeline.

Rawalpindi Ring Road project has been delayed multiple times, mainly due to the shortage of funding. According to RDA officials, a total cost of PKR 33.7 Billion will be spent on the project. RRR will feature 6 lanes on both sides, and a total of 5 interchanges will be developed. Furthermore, it will be developed and opened for traffic in one year, thousands of vehicles and heavy traffic will easily access the Lahore Islamabad Motorway, hence reducing the intercity traffic congestion in Rawalpindi.

The 5 interchanges will be as follows:

  • Baanth Interchange
  • Chakbeli Khan Interchange
  • Adyala Road Interchange
  • Chakri Road Interchange
  • Thalian Interchange

Moreover, the Commissioner also mentioned that industrial zones will be established in the surrounding area of Rawalpindi Ring Road. The total length of Phase 1 will be 38.3 kilometers, a total of 9000 Kanal of land is required for this highway, out of which 70% is acquired, and work for the remaining 30% is underway. Furthermore, the Rawalpindi Development Authority has also requested funds required from the caretaker government. A total of 36 villages in Punjab will be connected via Rawalpindi Ring Road. Frontier Works Organization (FWO) is carrying out the development of RRR project.
