RDA Formally Approves Leh Expressway after a Hearing

Leh Expressway Approval

Leh expressway has been a matter of dispute amongst the government and concerned authority, in this case, RDA. News reported that Rawalpindi Development is finally satisfied with the project and approved after a public hearing.

RDA agreed to issue the NOC for Leh Expressway after the public hearing. However, the final NOC will be granted after approval from the Environmental Protection Agency. RDA decided to take the matters into its own hands and formally write to the agency so that the project can get a duly approved No Objection Certificate. RDA assured the NOC issuance within 3 days, so the work on this project can officially start.

The following details were shared by RDA after the hearing:

  • The project will constitute a 16 km signal-free expressway. The original size of the Leh Expressway is reduced to 16 km.
  • The total cost for this project falls anywhere from around 105 to 108 billion. 240 million have been released by the governing body.
  • 29 objections were waived off from Leh Expressway after the public hearing
  • 665 Kanal of land has been acquired for the project, 574 trees will be chopped off and 574 (6-10 ft) trees will be planted in an alternate location.
  • Furthermore, 10,000 fruit trees will be planted on either side of Leh Expressway.

RDA wrote to the Environmental Protection Agency on 17 May 2022, but there is no news of final approval, we will update you as soon as the project gets the final NOC!
