LDA Allows Rooftop Gardening in Lahore to Reduce Environmental Pollution

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) in Pakistan has recently announced that it will allow rooftop gardening in Lahore as a way to reduce environmental pollution. This move has been welcomed by environmentalists who believe that it will help address the issue of air pollution in the city.

Lahore, like many other cities in Pakistan, suffers from high levels of air pollution. This is primarily due to the large number of vehicles on the road, industrial emissions, and the burning of fossil fuels for energy. One way to reduce air pollution is to increase the number of plants in the city, which absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air.

Rooftop Gardening in Lahore will be carried out according to the construction ordinances of LDA and orders of the Lahore High Court (LHC). During a Water and Environmental meeting, Commissioner Lahore M. Ali Randhawa announced this news. He went on to say that each department will be given a deadline for the implementation of court orders in Lahore.

Furthermore, the instructions for rooftop gardening in Lahore were also shared by LDA, which are as follows:

  • All buildings falling within the administrative limits of LDA should abide by the rooftop gardening policy.
  • 50% of the rooftop or each building will be specified for gardening and plantation.
  • Buildings that are already developed, as well as that, are under construction should abide by this policy

Note: LDA has given a 15 days deadline for all buildings to implement this policy, else wise, following actions will be taken against them:

  • Sealing the building premises
  • FIR against people who don’t abide by these regulations
  • Demolishing
  • Cut-off of utility services
  • Heavy fines/punishments

Rooftop gardening is an innovative solution to this problem. It involves growing plants on the rooftops of buildings, which provides several benefits:

  • Firstly, it helps to reduce the urban heat island effect, which is the phenomenon of cities being warmer than surrounding areas due to the large amounts of concrete and asphalt.
  • Secondly, rooftop gardens can help to improve air quality by absorbing pollutants from the air. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants and release oxygen into the atmosphere.
  • Thirdly, rooftop gardening can also provide food for urban residents. Growing fruits and vegetables on rooftops can help to reduce the demand for food transport, which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Rooftop gardening is an innovative solution to the problem of environmental pollution in cities. The LDA’s decision to allow rooftop gardening in Lahore is a positive step toward creating a more sustainable and livable city. It provides an opportunity for residents to take an active role in improving the environment and creating a healthier and more sustainable future for themselves and future generations.
