The Climate Change Ministry is going to work closely with provincial governments to introduce a green building code for an eco-friendly environment. The idea was floated so that the housing societies can adhere to these green codes and introduce sustainability in their projects.

All the provincial governments are encouraged to make it mandatory for the housing societies to include green belts. 30% of the total land of the housing societies must be allocated to green spaces and every housing project must abide by it.

Housing societies are encouraged to follow green building codes that will serve a dual purpose, at one end it would be promoting sustainability and would also enhance the beauty of the area. All the housing societies irrespective of their location will be bound to adhere to this new code.

Green building practices include the use of energy-efficient resources in construction. The waste management and disposal system is also part of this code.

The highlight of introducing a green building code is to lessen the carbon footprint. Every house that is built on this code will not put a strain on the environmental resources.

Malik Amin Aslam, Special Advisor to the PM on Climate Change, identified the fact that the new developing projects in Pakistan are the main reason for environmental damage. This can be stopped by using energy-efficient practices for construction.

It is now time to introduce a green building code so that Pakistan can lessen its resource consumption and emerge as a sustainable state. This green building code is also in line with the government’s billion tree initiative.
