Government of Punjab Likely to Replace Khasra Numbers with Digital Certificates

News: The Government of Punjab is taking different steps to transform the traditional system for the property sector into a digital and secure infrastructure. For this purpose, Punjab Government has decided to introduce digital certificates instead of khasra numbers for the registration of property. This will be a new land tracking system using which government will store the records with house numbers, instead of khasra, khatun, or khyut.

The Government of Punjab has already approved the Punjab Urban Land Enhancement Project and different efforts are being made to improve the traditional system. Now, the government has planned to replace khasra numbers with a digital certificate. This is a good initiative launched to enhance land management throughout the province. World Bank is also collaborating with Punjab Government for the implementation of the Urban Land Enhancement project and issued $150 Million for this project.

Using this fund, the government will establish a digital system for land management that will constitute ownership records of property using a GIS (Geographical Information System). Before implementing it all over Punjab, the government will do a test run for Jalalpur Jattan.

This will shift the traditional system online, facilitating both the government entities as well as the general public. People will be able to see the property ownership in a digital format on a map similar to google maps. Furthermore, this system will tend to reduce the patwari system and create a more efficient, secure, and facilitative online system for property owners.

A dedicated committee has been formed in the Commissioner’s office that will improve the pace of this project and digitize land management. Moreover, residents and property owners will be able to register online complaints and get assistance through video calls and live chats.
